My Celiac Journey: A Nutritionist’s Revelation

I’ll never forget the day I got the news. I was sitting in my doctor’s office, listing off my symptoms like a broken record: endless bathroom trips, crippling stomach cramps, and a scale that seemed stuck at 99 pounds. Everyone around me thought I was battling an eating disorder, but I knew something deeper was at play.

As a nutritionist, I should’ve known better, right? But here’s the thing—they don’t teach you everything in textbooks. Sure, we learned about celiac disease in undergrad, but it was always painted as a childhood issue. So when my doctor suggested testing for it, I chuckled. “Gluten allergy? Nah, I’d know if I had one.”

Turns out, I didn’t know squat. Two weeks later, that same doctor was on the line with results that flipped my world upside down—I had celiac disease.

Shock doesn’t even begin to cover it. I mean, suddenly everything made sense—why I was always tired, why my iron levels were perpetually in the gutter, why I caught every bug that came within a mile of me. But along with the clarity came a wave of overwhelm. How was I supposed to navigate this new reality?

That’s when I went into full-on research mode. I dug into celiac disease like my life depended on it (spoiler alert: it kinda did). And let me tell you, there’s a whole lot more to it than just cutting out gluten.

Did you know folks with celiac are advised to get a pneumonia vaccine? Or that having a leaky gut is par for the course, making nutrient absorption an uphill battle? Yeah, neither did I until I was knee-deep in this mess.

But here’s the silver lining—I figured it out. Armed with my newfound knowledge, I became my own best advocate. And as a nutritionist who’d been through the wringer, I knew firsthand the importance of finding someone who gets it. Someone who knows that managing celiac isn’t just about swapping wheat for gluten-free goodies—it’s about navigating a whole new way of living.

So here I am, sharing my story in the hopes that it’ll shine a light on the realities of celiac disease. Because yeah, it’s tough as hell, but it’s also a chance to rise above the chaos and rewrite the narrative on chronic illness. And if my journey can inspire even one person to take control of their health and find their own path to empowerment, then it’s all been worth it.
